We had a belated birthday dinner for my husband. When I asked him where he wanted to go, he answered “Fresh Corn Grill.” Although FCG is one of our favorite restaurants, I wanted to celebrate his birthday with a glass of wine at a full service restaurant. So I made a reservation here at Fundamental LA.
They encourage you to share all plates just like Izakaya or Tapas. More restaurants have followed this trend such as Ink or The Bazaar.
Four course tasting menu ($39) is offered as well. Although it is called tasting menu, they still expect you share everything with others. Basically, you have your empty plate and all dishes are served in the middle of table here.
It would be nice to taste a variety of dishes if you are with someone comfortable to do so. However, we had own dishes instead since I am still sick and don’t want to spread to him.
His second course: Local Prawns, Poached Egg, Chorizo, Grits
I was debating with this one. He offered a bite and it was very good too. FYI, his first course was Blue Crab with torched avocado and quail egg.
Overall, food quality is excellent. I feel it is a steal to have these tasting courses for $39 per person. He complains this cozy restaurant is a bit noisy, which is ok for me. My biggest turn off was that we found quite a few chipped plates. It’s like they really don’t care or that could be a compromise to serve quality food for affordable price? I don’t think it’s a good idea anyway 😦
